Training course on “Climate Change Impact Assessment” 07.07.2010 Climate change is a burning issue that attracts global attention as its day-to-day impacts affect the livelihoods, development and security of a nation, especially of Vietnam. The Environment and Development Section of AITVN in 2010 has designed and introduced the first short-term training course on "Climate Change Impact Assessment" in Vietnam in order to assist individuals and organisations those are envolving in establishing policies, programs, projects on climate change adaptation / mitigation and concerned on climate change impact assessment. The course was held at AITVN premises, B3 Building, University of Transport and Communications, Lang Thuong, Dong Da, Hanoi and lasted for 5 days, from 28 June to 2 July 2010.
During the five-day training course, the following topics were covered: (a) Overview of climate change and climate change impacts; (b) why climate change impact assessment is needed?; (c) identification of impacts: types, levels, and scope of climate change impact; (d) relationship between « climate change impact assessment » and « environmental impact assessment » in environment protection; (e) methods and tools for climate change impact assessment; (f) adaptation and mitigation methods; and (g) proposal of policies for adaptation and mitigation. A combination of application-oriented and interactive methods, which aims to enable participants to identify and build up proposals for impact assessment, adaptation/mitigation of climate change and natural calamity for their local areas, created an open and exciting learning atmosphere and greatly contributed to the success of the course. Participants of the course were lecturers of the Urban and Environment Department of Hanoi National Economics University and a project coordinator/leader of Climate Change Section of the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD). They all found the information, knowledge and skills provided during the course interesting and usefull and highly satisfied with the course content, methodology as well as the service quality of AITVN. They expected that AITVN will introduce some advanced courses on "tools and models for climate change impact assessment" at the soonest time. As planned, this training topic will be continued to introduce to other interested groups. The next training course is tentatively scheduled to be open in August 2010 in Ho Chi Minh City and in December 2010 in other locations such as Can Tho and Da Nang.
