Professional Master - Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management

AIT in Vietnam (AITVN) offers the AIT Professional Master Program in Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management (PM- DPMM) in Vietnam.

The aim of this new academic program is to instill the necessary interdisciplinary capacities to manage and minimize the effects of disasters in people on the front lines of disaster response and preparedness. Upon completion of the program, graduates will have gained a profound scientific understanding, analytical and management skills of natural and man-made disasters.

To obtain the Master degree students need to complete a 33-credit curriculum, consisting of 24 credits of courses work, 6 credits of research study and 3 credits of international internship.

The Professional Master in Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management (PM-DPMM) is a one-year academic program, spanning 2 semesters and a summer period of 12 weeks. The first semester with 12 credits includes courses: Floods and Droughts; Health and Ecological Risk Management; Climate Forecasting and Early Warning System; Remote Sensing and GIS for Disaster Risks Management. The summer period of 12 weeks from May to August, student will do the research study and international field trip. The second semester with 12 credits from August to December 2011 includes courses:  Community Based Disaster Risks Reduction; Coastal Resiliency to Natural Disaster Preparedness; Planning and Implementation of Emergency Management; and Managing Disasters.

With the teaching faculty members are from the Asian Institute of Technology (website: http://www.ait.ac.th ) the program has been designed with the flexible time schedule. The lectures will be delivered at weekend (Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday).

In order to apply for this program, applicants need to meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field of study
  • Minimum of 3 years of working experience in a related field of disaster preparedness, mitigation and management;
  • Proficiency in English

Selection of candidates will be based on previous academic performance and professional experience. There will be an interview organized in Vietnam for the final selection. To apply for admission, applicants must submit to AITVN:

  • A completed AIT application form
  • A certified copy of undergraduate certificate (in English)
  • A certified official student transcript (in English)
  • Two (02) letters of recommendation
  • A certificate of English language proficiency

  • English test and Interview: from 15/8 to đến 15/12/2010
  • English training program of AITVN: from 1/10 đến 15/11/2010
  • Orientation (tentative): 14/1/2011

Tuition fee is paid for the following items:

Application processing fee: 20 USD

Tuition fee: 16,440 USD

Including:

  • Registration fee : 500 USD
  • Tuition fee (430 USD/credit) : 14,190 USD
  • International field trip : 1,750 USD

Note: Fee for international field trip will be reimbursed if applicants do not expect to join.
